These five solutions to breathlessness are not widely known, and often ignored by physicians who tend to give fast pharmaceutical solutions instead. They're not really 'secret' in the true sense, as yoga teachers have been sharing these for many years!
1. Nose breathe
2. Breathe low & slow
If you nose breathe, you'll automatically breathe low and slow. Mouth breathing tends towards shallow and fast, only filling the narrowest part of the lungs. That's why you need more breaths, with more effort from the small muscles in the rib cage and upper body. This can waste up to 22% effort just on breathing.
3. Improve carbon dioxide tolerance
4. Keep your nose clean
If your nose is unblocked you can use short breath holds on the exhale to help clear the nose. Repeated for 2 - 3 minutes should start to make breathing easier, due to the combination of pooled carbon dioxide and nitric oxide in the nose. We go into more detail on this during the 5 Day Breath Challenge.
