Guiding You Through The Quagmire

I spent three years training for competitive freediving, setting 5 national records and representing the UK twice at the World Championships.

Freediving is holding your breath as you swim underwater - I competed in the pool so for me it was the distance I could swim on one breath.

My best performances are 150m swimming breast-stroke and 189m with the aid of a monofin, undulating like a mermaid.

How can you hold your breath for so long?

Is the question I get asked the most. And the answer surprises people, because it's not that I have big lungs or super-hero powers to swim on low oxygen. It's mainly because I learnt to become comfortable with discomfort.

And I did that by doing the same exercises that I will share with you.

I know how tough some of that training can be, when your mind is shouting at you to stop. But I learnt ways to challenge those thoughts, that allowed me to carry on holding my breath. Freedivers train their CO2 tolerance for at least 60-70% of the time.

The body and mind also needs to adapt to low oxygen, however the primary reason someone stops holding their breath is CO2.

Are you teaching me to freedive then?

No

I'm sharing simple exercises that train your CO2 tolerance, just as I do in freedive training. Consider it cross-training!

More importantly, when you hit a mental or physical block on your journey, I will be here to help you round that because I know exactly how it feels, as I've been there many times. Deep into that dark cave.

And there will be other people just like you, who are going on their breathing journey, experiencing the same challenges, who you can connect with.

Do I have what it takes?

If you want to address the root cause of your asthma or blocked nose, and reduce your dependency on medication, or manage anxiety, then you have the motivation right here to change.

If you will do whatever it takes to transform your breathing, then I will be with you every step of the way to help you make it happen.

You can test whether this approach can work for you by taking the 3 Day Trial, signing up for daily email reminders to try a range of breathing exercises that will help you to switch to nose breathing.

It takes guts to go in a different direction to most other people, but as David will tell you below, the reward is so worth it.

"It's counter-intuitive at first but then you find that your old assumptions just get superseded by a new and hitherto unexpected reality: effective breathing is a paradigm case of less being more. In the process [of learning the Oxygen Advantage exercises] I've become, definitively, an ex-asthmatic. No meds, no wheeze, no problem, whatever life throws up".
